When you own and run a business you should obviously know everything there is to know about it. Contrary to what some people believe, this can actually make it very difficult to figure out what on earth you should write about it.

This applies to all manner of different writing tasks. It could be blog posts, articles, copy to sell products or services, and everything in between. That’s why lots of business owners hire a writer to handle this part of their business for them.

Now I know you’re probably thinking ‘oh she would say that, she’s a writer!’ Of course – if you want to hire me I’m probably not going to say no as long as the nature of the work fits my skills. However there is a good reason for saying this if you are struggling to find the words to promote and describe your business.

Let’s say you sell lawnmowers. You probably know more about these lawnmowers than I do, but if I asked you to write something that really sells them to the customer, you may well have trouble doing so. This is where I come in. I may not know as much about lawnmowers as you do, but I do know how to make them appealing to the consumer. I know how to look at the features of each lawnmower and turn them into benefits the consumer will be interested in.

This is what I mean about gaining a fresh perspective on things. It doesn’t matter what your business is about. You could sell anything from cheese to carpentry supplies. The one thing that matters is perspective. As the owner of your business you have an up close and personal relationship with it. If you want to make sure you really sell the benefits of your products, you need someone with a bit of distance that can be applied in the right way.
